Faith, Money, War and Love
Performance Description
At the first rehearsals, there was no script, only a deck of cards. Lepage assigned each suit to one of four themes: love, faith, war and money. Four stories emerged from this structure:
- The story of a woman abandoned as a child, shortly after the Second World War, and raised in a convent. After more than a decade, she leaves West Germany for Paris.
- The story of a couple from West Germany who spend Valentine’s Day in Baden-Baden shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. There, in a casino, the wife loses her family inheritance.
- The story of a soldier unable to process the trauma of losing his most loyal comrade-in-arms during a mission in Afghanistan.
- The story of a gay couple who want to fulfil their dream of having a child through surrogacy.
Improvisations based on the cards created entire worlds, richly varied characters and four interwoven narratives spanning eight decades of German history.
