Based on the Works of Oscar Miłosz
7 Solitudes
Performance Description
7 Solitudes is a poetic journey through the works of Oscar Miłosz and the creative imagination of Robert Wilson.
The performance brings together Miłosz’s poetry, prose, fairy tales, dramatic works and metaphysical writings, asking existential questions about humanity and its place in the boundless universe. At the same time, it explores the depth of love and solitude, the premonition of death, the search for light and harmony, and the passage of time. At its centre stands the figure of the poet, a fascinating presence through whom our world becomes both more complex and easier to understand.
In his journey, the poet summons an imagined double: the famous dramatic figure of Don Juan, drawn from fragments of a play Miłosz wrote in his youth, full of hunger for life and a desire to conquer the world. These scenes intertwine with passages from his later drama Miguel Mañara, in which the main character, Don Juan of Seville, seeks redemption.
Miłosz’s extraordinary universe comes to life through Wilson’s poetic vision, built from unsettling, subjective abstractions and evocative stage images. The actors create universal figures that reveal the complexity, beauty and absurdity of the human soul. We follow the figure of the poet, observing the birth of the worlds of his imagination, the creative process and the boundaries he crosses. Wandering between doubt and wonder, exploring undefined spaces that will remain a mystery, he leads us towards a freedom available only to poets and towards the boundless destination of eternity.
The performance is one of two productions from Robert Wilson’s legacy that will premiere after his passing. One month before his death, on 31 July 2025, the artist completed the direction and design of the production, entrusting his collaborators with bringing the work to the stage.
Music used in the performance: Kinan Azmeh, Johann Sebastian Bach, Jennifer Koh, Dickie Landry, Lou Reed
